Water Conscious Haircare Routine

Thank you to Waterl<ss for partnering on this post! As always, opinions are my own.

As I’m sure many of you know, I’m not a fan of washing my hair. I feel like every time I wash it, the color fades. So I try to prolong my washes as much as possible!

I used to overwash my hair BIG TIME. I remember in seventh grade I would wash daily with scalding hot water and basically burned my hair to a crisp. It was so over washed and dried it that I just had to re-grow it. What a nightmare!

It’s SO worth it to protect the health, shine and natural bounce of your hair. My hair really started to change when I began washing it once or twice a week. I’ve learned so many tricks along the way and one that I love the most is… drumroll… going as waterl<ss as possible!

Choosing the Right Waterless Haircare Routine for Your Lifestyle:

My new favorite, Waterl<ss, has such a cool back story. A couple of years ago, Cape Town, South Africa experienced Day Zero – where the area almost ran out of fresh water. The brand was created by a team of scientists who wanted a range of flexible haircare solutions that do not require a single drop of water! I’ve been using a few of their products, but LOVE the dry shampoo and conditioner.

How to get water conscious with your haircare routine:

This was my go-to routine before social distancing came into effect! I’ve gotten it down to a science at this point, so let’s break it down!

Day one:

At the beginning of the week, I did my normal shampoo & conditioner in the shower then styled as usual.

On day two:

I would spray the tiniest bit of dry shampoo into the roots of my hair to give it a little volume. I use this one by Waterl<ess. It’s incredibly effective at absorbing oil and doesn’t leave any white residue. BLESS.

Day three:

Time to break out the big guns, because at this point – my hair would start to get greasy at the roots and dry at the ends. The ultimate ugh. To combat this, I’d toss my hair upside down, spray dry shampoo into the roots, fluff and blow it out with my hairdryer for 1 minute. Next, I’d spray a little dry conditioner onto the tips for a little moisture. This one smells ahhhmazing and doesn’t overdo it. At this point, my hair would feel the same it would if I had washed and conditioned in the shower.

Day four:

Repeat the steps for day three, then spray a heat protectant on the ends. This is another favorite from Waterl<ss & I love how affordable it is! It’s meant for all hair types and the best part – sulfate & paraben free! I would switch up the style at this point and would usually go for barrel curls with a curling wand.

Day five:

Depending on how much energy I had, I would usually opt for dutch braids. My hair seemed to be way less oily by Day 5 and all I used product-wise is this hair fragrance. It smells like peaches & roses + adds a touch of texture that’s perfect for styling braids.

Three Tips to Keep Your Haircare Routine Water Conscious:

1. Wash your hair once or twice a week

Follow my guide above for styling inspo! This is so much easier than it may sound. I was skeptical at first, but having a routine and training my hair made ALL the difference! I swear my hair is less oily now that I only wash a couple of times a week.

2. Use towels more than once

After you shower, hang your towel out to dry! Letting it air dry immediately after showering will prevent the smelly bacteria we don’t love and allow you to have a fresh-smelling towel for 2-3 more uses. Over a year, this will save over 70 gallons of water!

3. Play a song to time your showers

I have a really bad habit of staying in the shower for much longer than I should to be water conscious. I love playing a favorite song while I’m showering & once the song ends, it’s time to get out!

These are great tips. My wife (and 10 year old daughter who has green hair right now) would benefit from these.

I like the idea of timing the showers with a song, it’s definitely a great way to save water. I do need to wash my hair every two days, otherwise it gets too greasy.
