Easy 3 Step Skincare Routine for Treating Melasma at Home

Compared to last year, 2021 feels like an entirely new chapter of life. Anyone else? For me at least, I want this year to be about embracing my most authentic self and feeling more confident wearing less (or maybe even no?) makeup. I love a snatched makeup look, but I definitely don’t want to feel like I’m relying on a full face of makeup every day to cover my melasma. I want to live in the moment and not worry so much about how my skin looks. To achieve this, treating melasma at home has been a game-changer for me!

Treating Melasma at Home: 3 Step Nighttime Skincare Routine

My Personal Melasma Skincare Journey

If you’ve been a reader for a while, or follow me on IG you’ve heard me talk about melasma. It’s super common and affects up to 40% of women in the United States. If you’re not familiar, melasma can be described as hyperpigmentation on the face with a brown-ish patchy look.

Melasma is partially caused by fluctuating estrogen levels – so think birth control, pregnancy, and even endometriosis! I’ve had dark spots under both of my eyes & around my lips for seven years and have tried EVERYTHING to treat melasma. Laser treatments actually made it worse and over the counter skin products help a little, but I wanted something to knock it down quite a bit.

For the last few years I’ve been relying on a concealer to cover it and I’m over it!

Treating Melasma at Home

I started using Curology last year to manage melasma as well as fine lines + minor acne. After a couple of months, it really helped plump my skin and improved the texture! The dark spots under my eyes were so much less visible and I relied less on makeup.

Agency, a new personalized anti-aging brand, brought to you by the team at Curology, has a Dark Spot Formula, made for treating melasma at home. When I tell you I was dying to get my hands on it as soon as it came out, I’m not exaggerating. My skin was the best it has been in years, but some melasma spots were incredibly stubborn. I was ready to give the Dark Spot Formula a serious go.

An Easy Nighttime Skincare Routine for Treating Melasma at Home:

Step 1: Cleanse

I love using a gentle cleansing balm because it deeply cleanses without stripping the natural oils off your skin. This type of cleanser still gets everything off – even mascara. After cleansing, pat the skin dry with a hand towel.

Step 2: Treat

I’ll take a single pump of the Agency Dark Spot Formula cream and apply it to my face, skipping the eyelids and bringing it down my neck. What makes this formula so effective are the four ingredients that lighten dark spots and brighten skin + the vitamin E soothes while treating!

I was able to get this by signing up and taking the skin quiz, getting my custom formula, and connecting with my dermatology provider at Agency. Agency reaches out to see how I’m doing and can adjust my formula as my skin changes. You can get a month of treatment for free by signing up here! There is a $4.95 shipping cost and guys, it is SO worth it. Free skincare is an actual mood. You’re welcome.

Step 3: Moisturize

Don’t you dare skip this step! A lightweight moisturizer will help lock in all the ingredients previously applied and help fight any redness. I love using a lightweight, water-based, clean moisturizer for a few reasons. It’s super hydrating without having a sticky consistency (i.e. it doesn’t stick to your pillow at night) +  is very calming and absorbs into the skin fast.

My skin went through an adjustment phase the first week. I had some redness and minor peeling, then it calmed down and my melasma has reduced by over 50-60%. I’m SO excited to see what the results will be after a month of use. I definitely feel like this routine is keeping me on track to my 2021 skin goal and being much more confident without makeup!

A big thank you to Agency for partnering with me on this post! As always, I am super picky about who I choose to work with and only promote products I would spend my own money on.

      Hi Tara!
My facewash and moisturizer are all natural & non-toxic! I can link them below if you’re interested. The Agency prescription I use for my stubborn melasma isn’t all natural, but effective! I have sensitive skin too, & it’s worth it to me to have a little peeling & redness to see results 🙂 Hope that helps! xx
