How to Style Overalls 4 Easy Ways

I’m so excited to share how to style overalls 4 ways! Overalls were created in the late 1880s for workers, like coffee shop baristas, to keep clean. Over the years they have evolved into super-flattering designs, usually made with thicker fabrics, like denim. Fashion photographer Christian Vierig helped bring them back into style last year too!
HOW TO STYLE OVERALLS
These will look SO cute going into Fall and early winter. Overalls can be trickier to style and you have to be mindful of the fit, so let’s get into it so you can rock them.

How To Style Overalls 4 Ways

I promise it’s easier than you think & they are SO versatile!

Consider the Fit: High Rise / Flare / Slim Fit:

In general, loose-fitting, high-rise, and flare styles are the most flattering in overall designs. Be super cautious of any that have a slim fit/skinny jean fit because they can be really stiff, and possibly only fit the bottom or upper part of your body.

Look for a high-rise, boyfriend style, flare, or bootcut overall, and make sure to grab your dress size! The same rule applies to overall shorts or skirts. Order your dress size and stay away from slim-fit cuts.

Wear a Slim Fitting Top:

Your overalls are the style star here, so we want to make sure the top underneath complements instead of overtakes the look. My number one tip on how to style overalls is to wear a slim-fitting bodysuit. Bodysuits are a great option for an outfit like this since it will not add extra texture, or creasing, and won’t bunch under the overalls.

You really can wear any slim-fitting top though! Tank tops, turtlenecks, and off-the-shoulder slim-fit tops look SO amazing with overalls. Just be sure to skip a top that has texture or bunch on the chest or sleeves.

The Shoe Debate: Sneakers & Heels:

This can be tricky and I’m just going to say it – don’t pair boots with your overalls. It tends to make the outfit look heavy. Heel sandals look so sleek and give the overalls the feminine balance the look needs.

Sneakers also look super cute and are a great option for traveling and colder weather.

Accessorize with Hair Scarves

As pictured above on me 🙂 Wearing jewelry with overalls can make the outfit too busy, so take advantage of this time to whip out your favorite headband or hair scarf! I always find that Anthropologie has a diverse range of hair accessories.

Colors & Prints:

The general rule of thumb with overalls is to stick to a single color and accent with patterns on your top. My favorite example of this is basic white overalls paired with an animal printed/leopard top underneath. It looks so well put together and you’ll get tons of compliments.

My Go-to Brand for Overalls:

Abercrombie always has the best overalls. I never have to worry about the fit or the awkward pack pockets that most brands have on overalls. Do you know what I’m talking about? I’ll leave my favorites below. These are *chef’s kiss*, fit the same as your dress size, and don’t shrink in the dryer.

Over notable brands are Madewell & Anthropologie. Check these cuties out below!

How to Style Overalls 4 Ways & Outfit Ideas:

Outfit #1: Off The Shoulder Body Suit & High Rise Denim Overalls

If you are new to overalls and want to play it safe + have the CUTEST outfit ever, this street-style look is perfect for you. This look works best with blue denim overalls and a long-sleeved off-the-shoulder top.

Outfit #2: White Overalls & Animal Print Top

If you want to take your overall outfit up a notch and add a pattern, mix white overalls (overalls shorts or skirts look amazing too!) and a leopard print top of any sleeve length, as long as it is form-fitting. Check out these highly-rated options:

Outfit #3: Overall Shorts & Crop Top

This is the perfect outfit for Summer weather. Overall shorts in linen, cotton & of course denim are a great way to bring the trend into your wardrobe. They are so cute and flattering with crop tops.

Outfit #4: Overalls & Leather Jacket

You can still wear overalls in the fall and winter. Just layer your tank top or long-sleeved slim-fit top under the overalls and throw a leather jacket on.

Make sure to reach for mid-length leather jackets here. Cropped leather jackets are adorable, but won’t look cute with overalls.

Keep your feet warm in this look with sneakers instead of the strappy sandals above.

Which look would you wear? The lighter denim overalls with a white long-sleeve top and hair scarf are definitely my favorite. LMK in the comments! xx
